"Dogbone" Machining Complete in One Setup on CUBIC Diamond 20 Swiss-Type CNC

The “dogbone” is the main piece of drive shaft used in R/C race cars and trucks.

At the end, I throw in some extra blooper footage, please note that’s not supposed to happen in normal machining conditions, which should have the coolant ON!

GT mini and Bar Feeder: Perfect Combo

GT mini and bar feeder

Our GT mini super compact gang-tool turning center is designed for precision turning of small parts both for bar work and for second operations.

GT mini is small. It takes up only 48” by 40” of shop space. The GT mini has hydraulic 5C collet closer as standard equipment. It accepts bar stock up to 1.02” (26mm).

Cubic recently started providing its own bar feeder to go with the GT mini. This makes installation easier and reduces the time a customer has to wait for bar feeder integration from another vendor. The type of bar feeder chosen is a short bar magazine loader. GT mini is meant for simple turning operations, because GT mini already has an air-operated programmable parts catcher, adding a bar feeder is a very natural next step to make it a completely unattended setup for bar turning.

Beyond bar processing, an optional 4” hydraulic 3-jaw chuck is also available for operator loaded parts.

GT mini’s spindle is rated at 6,000 rpm maximum and is powered by a 3 HP spindle motor. GT mini uses Mitsubishi EZMotion E60 control and servo package for high performance CNC with a space saving design.

Like all other CNC lathes from Cubic, GT mini features gang-tool style tooling for flexible setups. The horizontal tool table accepts wide range of toolings and accessories.

Cubic Machinery provides a standard tooling package with each machine. Cubic Machinery can also supply optional riser tool plates if a customer wants to re-use existing 3/8”, 1/2” or 3/4” center height Hardinge-style toolings.

GTV: 24/7 Performance

GTVs in a cell

CNC West magazine wrote about one of our customers in Anaheim, CA who has 4 of our GTV machines in turn-mill configuration. His shop runs the GTVs 24 hours a day 7 days a week, performing 2nd operations involving helical ramping.

Couple of juicy quotes from Lou, the owner:

I approached Cubic Machinery to build the machines I wanted. They said they could do it. They guaranteed me their machines would meet my specifications, so I placed an order for four machines. Now for first time ever, my secondary ops are waiting for my primaries.

The Cubic machines are very small footprint, combination turning-milling machines with pneumatically driven live tooling for milling operations. The spindle speed is 6,000 rpm, but it is the rapids that make the machines “the fastest on the market,” according to Polic.
